Walk through any warehouse or distribution center and you will see two films doing two very different jobs. Stretch film wraps pallets — the clear, clingy film spiral-wrapped around stacked cartons to hold them as a unit during transport. Both are plastic films. Both protect goods. But the materials, application methods, equipment requirements, and cost structures are fundamentally different. How Stretch Film Works

Stretch film is a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) film manufactured to be elastic. When pulled during application, the film elongates 100–300% of its original length and attempts to return to its original dimensions, creating a sustained inward force that holds the wrapped load together.

The cling comes from two sources: the inherent tackiness of LLDPE (especially cast film) and, on many commercial grades, a cling additive (polyisobutylene or similar) on one or both sides. This combination means stretch film sticks to itself without adhesive and does not need heat to activate.

  • Gauge (thickness): 60–120 gauge for machine application, 70–80 gauge for hand application. One gauge = 0.254 microns. An 80 gauge film is approximately 20 microns.

How Shrink Wrap Works

Shrink wrap is a polymer film — PVC, polyolefin, or polyethylene — manufactured with molecular orientation that makes it contract when heated. The film is loosely wrapped or sealed around a product, then passed through a heat tunnel or exposed to a heat gun. At the activation temperature (typically 130–180°C depending on material), the film shrinks 30–60% and conforms tightly to the product shape.

The result is a sealed, form-fitting package that provides tamper evidence, moisture protection, and a professional retail appearance that stretch film cannot achieve.

PVC shrink film: The most widely used shrink material worldwide. Excellent clarity, high shrink rate (40–60%), low cost. Ideal for bottle wraps, multipack bundles, and general retail packaging. Use stretch film when: You are wrapping pallets for warehouse storage or shipping. The goal is load containment and stability, not individual product presentation. You want the lowest cost per pallet. You need to access individual boxes on the pallet without unwrapping the entire load (cut and rewrap is simple with stretch film).

Use shrink wrap when: You are packaging individual products or multipack bundles for retail sale. Tamper evidence is required (pharmaceuticals, food, electronics). You need a sealed package for moisture or dust protection. Product presentation matters — retail shelf appearance, display packaging, gift sets.

Use both when: Most distribution operations use stretch film for pallet loads AND shrink wrap for individual product or case-level packaging. They are complementary, not competing.
