What is food wrap?

Food wrap — also called cling film, cling wrap, plastic wrap, or saran wrap — is a thin, transparent plastic film designed for direct food contact. Its primary function is to:

  • Seal food in bowls, trays, and containers to prevent drying out
  • Protect food from contaminants, dust, and cross-contamination in refrigerators and display cases
  • Extend shelf life by creating a moisture and oxygen barrier around fresh food
  • Display food attractively in supermarket fresh-food departments (the film is transparent and self-clinging)

The term “food wrap” distinguishes this product from industrial wrapping films like stretch wrap (pallet wrap), which is not food-grade and must never contact food.

Three types of food wrap material

1. PVC food wrap (polyvinyl chloride)

PVC cling film is the most widely used food wrap material globally, especially in commercial and HORECA settings.

Advantages:

  • Superior self-cling — sticks to itself, glass, ceramic, stainless steel and polystyrene trays without heat or adhesive
  • Crystal-clear transparency — ideal for supermarket display where the customer needs to see the product
  • Excellent anti-fog performance in refrigerated display cases
  • Thin gauge (8-12 microns) with strong mechanical performance
  • Lower cost per square meter compared to PE at equivalent performance

Limitations:

  • Not recommended for microwave use — heat can increase plasticizer migration into fatty foods
  • Some markets have regulatory restrictions on PVC in direct food contact (Japan, parts of EU)
  • Requires food-grade plasticizer system (DEHA or ATBC, not restricted phthalates)

Typical applications: Supermarket meat and seafood wrapping, deli counter display, restaurant kitchen bowl covering, food processing line covering.

2. PE food wrap (polyethylene)

PE cling film is the standard food wrap for household use and any application involving microwave reheating.

Advantages:

  • Microwave safe — heat-stable up to approximately 110C
  • PVC-free — preferred in markets with PVC concerns or where consumers are health-conscious
  • Freezer safe — does not become brittle at low temperatures
  • No plasticizer system required — PE is inherently flexible

Limitations:

  • Weaker self-cling compared to PVC — PE cling film uses tackifier additives to create cling, but it does not grip surfaces as firmly
  • Slightly hazy compared to PVC — less ideal for display applications
  • Needs to be slightly thicker (10-15 microns) to match PVC’s mechanical performance
  • More prone to static during dispensing

Typical applications: Home kitchen use, microwave-safe food covering, frozen food wrapping, retail consumer rolls in health-conscious markets.

3. PVDC food wrap (polyvinylidene chloride)

PVDC is the material behind the original Saran Wrap brand (now owned by SC Johnson). It is the premium food wrap material with the best barrier properties.

Advantages:

  • Best oxygen barrier among all food wrap materials — extends shelf life significantly
  • Good moisture barrier
  • Crystal clear

Limitations:

  • Significantly more expensive than PVC or PE
  • Stiffer and harder to handle
  • Limited number of manufacturers globally
  • Environmental concerns similar to PVC

Market note: PVDC food wrap has largely been replaced by PVC and PE in most commercial applications. The original Saran Wrap formula was changed from PVDC to PE by SC Johnson in 2004, reducing its cling performance — which is why many American consumers feel that “saran wrap doesn’t stick as well as it used to.”

Food wrap by application

Different food service environments demand different food wrap specifications:

Supermarket fresh-food departments

Supermarkets are the largest commercial consumer of food cling film. Applications include:

  • Meat counter: PVC food wrap at 9-11 microns, 380-450mm wide, on 1000-1500m commercial rolls. The film must be crystal clear (customers buy with their eyes), self-clinging to polystyrene trays, and food-safe for direct meat contact.
  • Deli and cheese counter: Same PVC food wrap, often in 300mm width for manual hand-wrapping.
  • Produce section: PVC or PE food wrap for overwrapping vegetable trays and fruit packs.
  • Tray-wrapping machines: Automatic machines require consistent thickness (tolerance +/- 0.5 microns) and a core diameter that matches the machine specification.

Restaurant and HORECA kitchens

Hotels, restaurants and catering operations use food wrap for:

  • Covering prep bowls and containers in walk-in refrigerators
  • Wrapping leftover portions for storage
  • Covering dough during proofing
  • Protecting plated food during transport from kitchen to event

HORECA food wrap is typically PVC at 10-12 microns, in 300mm or 450mm x 500m rolls on dispensers with a slide cutter. Thicker film (12-15 microns) is used in high-volume operations for tear resistance.

Food processing and manufacturing

Food processors use food wrap for:

  • Wrapping individual food items on a production line
  • Intermediate protection between processing stages
  • Packing finished products for cold-chain distribution

Food processing food wrap needs to meet the same food-contact standards as retail wrap, but the specifications often differ: wider rolls (500mm+), thinner film (8-9 microns to reduce material cost at scale), and specific elongation and cling properties for automated equipment.

Home kitchen

Household food wrap is the smallest format — typically 300mm x 30-100m rolls in a cardboard cutter box. The global household food wrap market is dominated by PE in developed markets (US, EU, Japan) and PVC in developing markets (Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America).
